Job Description

Basic Functions:

The Plant Microbiologist is responsible for implementing Micro Control programs that ensure all production meets the requirements of the QS 023 – Microbiological Control. Specifically, the Plant Microbiologist is responsible for Micro laboratory operations,

assuring that the testing is done in conformance to CP standards and guidelines. The Plant Microbiologist is also responsible for developing and implementing the site micro control program in partnership with other functions (Operations & Engineering).

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Develop & implement a microbiological sampling and testing program for water, raw materials, work-in-process (WIP), environmental samples & finished products at the facility. This plan must be based on QS 023.

2) Ensure all testing is performed according to corporate methods and policy and adheres to good microbiological practices. This includes the set up and administration of a laboratory quality assurance system that covers method and material qualification as well as equipment IQ/OQ/PQ, calibration & maintenance.

3) Understand and use basic laboratory safety equipment and instructions, precautions in handling and disposing of biological materials, in accordance with local environmental regulations.

4) Ensure that the reporting of data and maintenance of records is documented. Also, that the interpretation of the data is correct and that the results are effectively communicated to appropriate individuals, including management.

5) In partnership with operations & engineering, develop and implement plant floor micro control programs based on the C&S Guidelines, Control Point Monitoring, Micro Susceptibility Index and Process Validation.

6) Devise and execute a program of routine problem resolution and continuous improvement.

7) Train & develop the laboratory staff using the principles of Coaching & Feedback as well as the Competency Development Map for Microbiology.

8) Develop & implement microbiology training for plant floor management and operators.

9) Participate in internal audits and external audits (contract manufacturers & labs, suppliers, etc.) Function as part of the Plant GMP & Quality Team.

10) Interface with Global & Divisional Quality/Microbiology teams to provide input on programs, procedures and methods, and receive guidance & support on implementation of programs.

Required Qualifications:


Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related major. Must include significant course work in Microbiology (at least four courses).


Three to five years of industrial experience (Personal Care, Pharmaceutical, Food, Environmental). This experience should include working in a manufacturing environment both in a lab and with exposure to plant floor micro control programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Proficiency with MS Access

2. First-hand experience participating in regulatory inspections

3. Experience in a manufacturing plant environment

4. Experience preparing documentation for Product Registration in country of sale

5. Knowledge of external regulations
